President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. convened a situation briefing with selected Cabinet members on October 4, 2024 in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte to assess the agricultural damages caused by Typhoon Julian. Among the attendees was Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel Jr., who reported significant losses in the province of Ilocos Norte, the hardest-hit area.
As of the initial report gathered in October 3,2024 Ilocos Norte incurred P481.27 million worth of damages . However, with additional reports from local government units gathered by the DA Regional Field Office I (DA-RFO I), the total damage increased to P516.1 million as of October 4,2024. The devastation primarily affected rice, corn, high-value crops, livestock, and agricultural infrastructure projects.
Secretary Laurel, in collaboration with DA-RFO I OIC Regional Executive Director Dr. John B. Pascual, presented an initial list of interventions amounting to P115 million. These include hybrid rice and corn seeds, various vegetable seeds, bio-fertilizers, and essential drugs and biologics for livestock to support the recovery of affected farmers in Ilocos Norte.
At the conclusion of the situation briefing, the Province of Ilocos Norte through Governor Matthew Joseph Marcos Manotoc received a check worth P100 million from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. for the rehab and recovery of the province from the devastation caused by Typhoon Julian.
The government is committed to providing immediate assistance to ensure the restoration of agricultural productivity in the region.
