A Pampanga-based institutional buyer procured a total of P1.072 million worth of onions from a farmer in Pangasinan in order to help the latter market their produce amid the controversial supply and price of the said commodity in the country.
On Sunday, the DA’s KADIWA truck assisted Merlita Gallardo of Bayambang, Pangasinan in the hauling of 2,000 kilograms or two tons of her onion produce to Lubao, Pampanga.
DA Region 1’s Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division said that the institutional buyer, the Sakahon Marketplace, Inc., and Ms. Gallardo agreed for the purchase of the onions at a farmgate price of P165 per kilogram.
Aside from the two tons hauled yesterday, additional 4.5 tons of onion will be transported by the KADIWA truck on January 24, 26 and 28.
Gallardo has sought the assistance of DA for the marketing of their onion harvest as she now took over the responsibility of tilling their farm since the death of her husband, an onion farmer who, in 2021, took his life after suffering losses incurred due to harabas infestation of his onion farm.
