To better appreciate the real-life heroes, the Ilocos region Department of Agriculture joins in the nationwide celebration of the Farmers’ and Fisherfolks’ month with the theme “Modernisasyon at Industriyalisasyon tungo sa masaganang ani at mataas na kita”.
In a simple ceremony this Thursday, May 5, 2022, DA RFO 1 installed Mr. Benjamin Campañano as a farmer-director of the Ilocos region.
Following the long reign of the Emeritus awardee Mr. Vincent Adorna as the Regional Agriculture and Fishery Council chairperson, Mr. Campañano was elected as the new RAFC chair last year. He was a former mayor of Burgos, Ilocos Norte who opted to work as farmer leader after retiring from government service.
The activity was highlighted by passing of the key of responsibility by OIC-RED Nestor Domenden to the new farmer-director wherein the latter will perform routinary functions that would not in any way affect the government rules and procedures as well as the Civil Service rules and regulations governing regular employees.
Mr. Campañano will assume the duties and responsibilities of the director for the whole month of May as stated in the program guidelines.
The month of May is proclaimed as Farmers’ and Fisherfolks’ Month by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 33 and was first celebrated in May 1989 to give recognition to the role and contributions of the farmers and fisherfolks in ensuring food security and sustainability.
