As per BFAR Shellfish Bulletin No. 24, Series of 2020, all types of shellfish and Acetes sp. or Alamang from Alaminos City, Bani, Bolinao, Anda, and Sual in the province of Pangasinan are SAFE FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION.

Meet Mr. Fidel Rante, fondly called “The Maratangtang King” in the north as he pioneered the sea urchin culture in his province.

In the 1980s, the University of the Philippines undertook a research of his technology which was later on adapted and recommended for the commercialization of sea urchin production in the country. Sec. Dar, in his recent visit in Ilocos Sur awarded to fishermen-beneficiaries around P9.8M worth of projects supporting the sea urchin industry in Region I.

Mr. Augusto Villones, on behalf of the members of the Maritangtang Fisherfolk Association in Nalvo, Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur thanked the Bureau of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources (BFAR) through DA Secretary William Dar for the provision of sea urchin cages during its launching and ceremonial turn-over to the association on November 3, 2020.

The project aims to provide livelihood assistance to the members while giving them better opportunity for sustainable income and production.
