Zeroing in on the importance of promoting not only food production but to have better nutrition, a better environment and better life through sustainable agriculture, the Department of Agriculture celebrates this year’s World Food Day 2021 by staging a Community Seed Pantry.
Held at the regional office and its satellite stations in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and Pangasinan, DA distributed free vegetables to selected barangays and farmers’ associations in said provinces.
At the Pangasinan Research & Experiment Center (PREC) in Sta. Barbara and Sual, Pangasinan, recipients received 60 packs of assorted vegetable seeds including seeds produced by the station such as Cowpea, Pole Sitao, Hot pepper, Upo, Tomato, Okra, Mungbean, Eggplant, Squash and one kg each of vermicast.
Meanwhile, at the Ilocos Norte Research & Experiment Center (INREC) several glutinous corn seeds, assorted vegetable seeds, and seedlings were distributed to recipients.
At the DA-Regional Field Office, 10 selected barangays received 60 packs of various vegetable seeds plus a set each of garden tools.
Aside from the community seed pantry, DA-RFO I is also conducting a photo contest to celebrate the event.
World Food Day 2021 is celebrated every 16th month of October spearheaded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) worldwide and the Department of Agriculture as the lead agency in the government creating various activities.
The theme for this year’s World Food Day is “Safe food now for a healthy tomorrow”. It is based on appreciating the individuals who have contributed to creating sustainable surroundings where no one is left hungry.##
