Taking a significant step to support local farmers, the Department of Agriculture in Ilocos turned-over Php1 million worth of check to the Aliguas Calasiao Farmers Agriculture Cooperative as a trading capital for their yellow corn trading enterprise, aimed at enhancing the livelihood of local farmers.
The check was handed over by DA-Regional Executive Director Fidel Libao to Mr. Rufu Idos, Jr., the Chairman of the Cooperative. This initiative is set to benefit approximately 26 farmers, facilitating the purchase of 52,000 kilograms of dried yellow corn.
With the provision of this trading capital, farmers will have access to a secure market, offering a price increment of P0.50 above the prevailing market rate of Php20.00 per kilogram.
Beyond cooperative members, non-members may also benefit from this financial grant as the cooperative has the capacity to purchase produce from non-members, with a limited volume of 2,000 kilograms per farmer.
The cooperative will function as a consolidator, providing an income-generating opportunity for corn farmers in Calasiao. Aimed at improving the economic conditions of local farmers, this initiative will likewise contribute to the overall agricultural development in the region while empowering local farmers to enhance their productivity and income.
