The Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 1 thru the Rice Banner Program conducted a 3 – day training for Agriculture Extension Workers (AEW) and Farmer Leaders in the Region regarding Rice Crop Manager (RCM) Advisory Service for the Implementation of Inbred Rice Model Farm cum Seed Exchange Project.
The activity aims to enhance the knowledge and skills of the farmers in the region through hands-on exposure on inbred rice production technology on May 7 – 9, 2019 at Hotel Trish, Mangaldan, Pangasinan.
In her message, Regional Technical Director for Operations – Ms. Erlinda F. Manipon informed the participants that Region 1 is among the top producer of rice in the country in terms of yield per hectare. She encouraged the AEWs to assists their fellow farmers in order to increase their production.
“We have been doing this in the past years for our hybrid rice production. This time we will focus on inbred rice. The DA wants everyone here to be capacitated so that we remain to be among the top producing regions when it comes to rice,” RTD Manipon said as she underscored the importance of the training.
Meanwhile, Ms. Leah Coloma – Agriculturist I of DA – RFO1 explained the requirements and the procedures on how to use the RCM application for the model farm to be established. She also tackled the use of Garmin, a GPS device used to locate and to know the accurate total area of the farmer’s field needed in the RCM.
“The model farm site shall be geotagged and mapped using GPS device, farmer recipient shall be registered in a field registry and shall be given an ID,” Coloma explained.
Mr. Norwen Ian Cervera – Project Evaluation Officer I of DA – RFO1 Pangasinan Research and Experiment Center (PREC), Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan discussed the mechanics of implementation for the model farm site where he said that there will be 20 sites (14 irrigated area for the wet and dry season and six (6) rainfed areas) to be established in the Region. These 20 sites will have a total area of 200 hectares -10 hectares contiguous area per site.
In order to implement the inbred rice model farm project, one of the counterparts of the DA is to provide the inputs needed for the farm.
During the last day of the training, the participants witnessed and participated in the actual demonstration using the Garmin device and the RCM application in one of the proposed area for the model farm located in Brgy. Golden, Mapandan, Pangasinan.
