Joining the National Nutrition Council’s (NNC’s) Search for Best Office Garden as part of the lined-up activities for this year’s celebration of Nutrition Month, the Department of Agriculture-Regional Field Office I (DA-RFO I) has established its own food garden in the office.
The search was launched last July 2018 and aims to encourage families, communities, government employees to engage in food gardening towards improved food and nutrition especially among Filipino children and can contribute to household food security.
The search is open to all government offices that could allot at least 20 square meters area to be planted with various vegetables using recycled materials.
DA-RFO I as among the eight participating agencies in the Search alongside with the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and five other government agencies in the region. As part of the criteria, the agencies should observe the implementation of Good Agricultural Practices and have proper documentation on the establishment of the office garden from planting until the harvesting operation.
Cash prizes awaits the winners where First Prize will receive Php20,000.00 and a Plaque of Recognition, the second and third prize winners will receive Php15,000.00 and Php10,000.00, respectively, plus a Plaque of recognition for both winners. A consolation prize of P4,000.00 each and a plaque of recognition will be given to non-winning agencies.
This year’s theme of the Nutrition month celebration is “Ugaliing Magtanim, Sapat na Nutrisyon Aanihin,” which focuses on NNC’s campaign to improve the health condition of Filipinos by consuming safe and nutritious food through backyard gardening.
