A new research station of the Department of Agriculture Regional-Field Office 1 (DA-RFO 1) may soon rise in the Province of Ilocos Sur to cater to the province’s agriculture needs and a place where farmers in Ilocos Sur could easily access various assistance from DA such as inputs and agri-machineries, including technology demonstration site where various researches will be developed, among others.
In a brief meeting at the DA Regional Office on July 11, 2017 with key officials of the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) headed by Regional Director Edison C. Riñen, DA-RFO I Regional Executive Director Narciso A. Edillo is hopeful that a new research station will soon be developed in the Province of Ilocos Sur.
Director Narciso Edillo recognized the importance of establishing a satellite research station strategically located in all provinces of the region to be able to come-up with location specific interventions since all four provinces of the Ilocos Region has its own unique and specific land classification including environmental factors affecting the production of farmers. All provinces except Ilocos Sur currently maintain a DA research station.
Dir. Edillo initially sought assistance from Ilocos Sur Governor Ryan Luis V. Singson during one of their official meetings and requested for any available area in the province where DA can put up a satellite research station at which the governor committed to support the plan and suggested areas in the province for said purpose.
As a result, an area within the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority (PhilFIDA) Regional Office compound located at Brgy. Labnig in San Juan, Ilocos Sur is being negotiated by DA thru the Provincial Government of Ilocos Sur for the establishment of a DA research station.
PhilFIDA is an attached agency of the DA, and sharing the same vision and mission of carrying out their mandate towards countryside development, PhilFIDA has agreed to share an area with the DA for the development of DA’s research station in the province. A memorandum of Agreement is being firmed up to seal the deal and ensure that both parties will work together for the furtherance of better and appropriate services to the agri sector in Ilocos Sur.
In the past, DA has maintained a satellite station at San Ildefonso, Ilocos Sur but the area was later reclaimed by the Municipal Local Government Unit of San Ildefonso for expansion purposes such as additional municipal service area.
